The Sunken Garden

The Sunken Garden is where it all started, when we first set to work on the garden in 2000. The garden when we arrived was all slope, with no flat areas at all, and our first thought was to create a lawn so that there would be somewhere for our three young children to play. The lawn replaced a sloping grassy bank and a gravel drive, which came right to the front door. When we were excavating the grassy bank we found a magnificent limestone outcrop, which we retained. I got the idea of putting a palm tree in the middle of the lawn from a garden I had visited in County Cork, Ireland. It has set the theme for the entire garden. In the ten years since we planted the palm tree it has doubled in size and a tiny Pinus Patula to the rear has grown into a magnificent tree.
